June 25, 2018 -- Drs. Gabriela Blohm and John Lednicky wrote an article in The Conversation about how they identified a potentially dangerous pathogen while studying the Zika virus in Venezuela.
The researchers found that Madariaga virus began crossing from horses to humans during the peak of the Zika epidemic in 2016. Blohm and Lednicky stressed the importance of monitoring viruses that harm animals since some animal viruses can also harm humans.
