Two researchers from the Emerging Pathogens Institute — Herbert P. Schweizer and Apichai Tuanyok — Melioidosis Report -- WER in the WHO’s November 18 issue of the Weekly Epidemiological Record.
In addition to discussing the Eighth World Melioidosis Congress, which took place in August, the report describes how melioidosis results from infection by Burkholderia pseudomallei bacteria. Every year, tens of thousands of people die from the disease. Though it was once thought to be isolated in southeast Asia and northern Australia, B. pseudomallei has also been found in other regions, including the Caribbean and Central and South America.
