EPI faculty members work with Haitian communities to reduce vectors of disease transmission

August 18, 2017 -- GAINESVILLE -- Dr. Kevin Bardosh, a medical anthropologist and member of the Emerging Pathogens Institute, collaborated with several EPI researchers to find community-based methods of reducing the mosquitoes responsible for lymphatic filariasis and malaria in Haiti.

The goal of this project is to develop a culturally competent approach to larval source management, and in an article published today in the journal "Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases," the authors reflect on some of the challenges observed in the field. Lack of consistent garbage cleanup, for example, leads people in many communities to dump garbage in canals like the one pictured below.
