Abstract: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) provides support for three types of investigator-initiated research centers: core center grants (P30), research "center of excellence" grants (P50), and comprehensive research "center of excellence" grants (P60). This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) provides support for the P60 Research "center of excellence." A P60 provides support for broadly based, innovative, multidisciplinary research programs consisting of related research endeavors and associated core infrastructure to ensure their effective and synergistic functioning. In addition, the center presents opportunities for bi-directional transdisciplinary work and supports translational drug abuse treatment research. The centers are designed to bring together into common focus divergent but related research and resources or facilities within a given research community.

In addition, Comprehensive Centers support continuing education for health care professionals and dissemination of information to the public. They should include components of basic, clinical, prevention, epidemiology, health services, or other applied areas. While not all of these areas must be represented (e.g., a center could propose basic science and community prevention), there should be a comprehensive approach to the research theme. It is important that the research supported not be simply a collection of independent research projects that are only loosely related. Each individual research component must be systematically related both to some other components and to the core infrastructure. Training and mentoring to enhance junior researchers' or other researchers' skills should be conducted in the context of the research, but funds may not be used for training stipends or training not required to conduct the research.

Abstract: This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits proposals to develop new insight into the role of microbes in human oral health and disease through research on the total oral microbial community (microbiota) using metagenomic approaches built upon recent developments in DNA sequencing, gene assembly, and bioinformatics.

Listed below are examples of studies that would be responsive to this FOA. These are only illustrative examples and are not listed in priority order. Applicants are encouraged to propose other topics consistent with the goals of this funding opportunity. Metagenomics will be used in many oral microbiome research projects, including the following:
1. Identification of uncultured bacteria, archaea, bacteriophages, animal viruses, and fungi
2. Reconstruction of complete genomes of uncultured microbes
3. Construction of metabolic pathways of microbes in the oral ecosystem
4. Localization of microbes through the use of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)
5. Development of the oral microbial community as humans age from infants to adults
6. Role of perturbation of the (normal) oral microbial community (not just the acquisition or expansion of single species) on health

Because of the complexity of such projects, the establishment of collaborative scientific teams, both domestic and international, with diverse scientific disciplines studying polymicrobial diseases, including microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, clinical medicine, pathology, bioengineering, imaging technology, and mathematical modeling is encouraged.

Awards issued under this FOA are contingent upon the availability of funds and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.

This program does not require cost sharing.

Abstract: This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits research grant applications to conduct studies designed to develop innovative approaches that would contribute to understanding of the mechanisms that impact on the virulence of infections involving two or more microorganisms or strains of microorganisms (with the exception of HIV).

This FOA encourages investigators to think beyond the one organism-one disease concept and instead to consider the fact that many diseases are caused by the synergistic and inhibitory interactions of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. Projects should include studies aimed at understanding the cellular and molecular interactions of pathogens with the normal flora as well as the interactions among pathogens themselves, and how commensal organisms can be used to prevent or treat infections; however, this FOA is limited to those projects that involve or are based on intermicrobial interactions that have been well-documented to occur in clinical settings.

In addition, extensive research is needed on the host responses to polymicrobial infections in order to develop new approaches to treat and prevent these infections. The development of co-infection models and the use of genomic and proteomic technologies to identify common virulence mechanisms and host response patterns as well as the development of diagnostic and prognostic microbial or host signature patterns are encouraged. Because of the complexity of such projects, the establishment of collaborative scientific teams, both domestic and international, with diverse scientific disciplines studying polymicrobial diseases, including microbiology, immunology, biochemistry, clinical medicine, pathology, bioengineering, material science, imaging technology, and mathematical modeling are encouraged.

Abstract: The Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA's) Conservation Endowment Fund (CEF) provides financial support for the conservation and related scientific and educational initiatives of AZA member institutions and their collaborators. Established in 1984, the CEF is a critical part of the AZA's effort to meet its conservation objectives.

The types of projects supported by CEF are
- Animal Health: Research projects, symposia, or publications that increase knowledge of or develop new approaches to assessing or treating medical conditions affecting animals in managed environments or in the wild;
- Animal Welfare: Research projects, symposia, or publications that increase knowledge of or develop new approaches to assessing the physical health and psychological well being of individual animals in a captive environment;
- Breeding and Reintroduction: Zoo and aquarium-based programs for breeding, reintroducing or translocating endangered or threatened wildlife;
- Education: Programs that raise public awareness and appreciation of wildlife conservation issues or stimulate conservation action;
- Field Conservation: Initiatives on behalf of endangered and threatened species and their habitats;
- Professional Training: Programs that transfer skills and technology and empower new conservation leaders, particularly in developing countries; and
- Wildlife Biology and Conservation: Research projects, symposia, or scholarly publications that increase knowledge of or create new approaches to wildlife conservation.

Proposals are classified into two of the following categories: field conservation/international training, research, animal welfare, conservation education, animal health, and captive management/propagation.

Preference is given to projects that
- reflect the priorities of related AZA committees or the AZA Board of Directors;
- provide a direct link between zoo and aquarium animal collections and the conservation of endangered or threatened wildlife and ecosystems in the North America and worldwide;
- implement, rather than define, conservation goals;
- improve management, welfare, and care of endangered and threatened wildlife in a zoological setting;
- are less likely to receive significant support from sources other than the CEF;
- are collaborative in nature;
- are likely to have a high conservation return for the investment;
- are logistically feasible and fiscally and scientifically sound; and
- benefit a large number of animals, institutions, or programs.

CEF grants are intended as seed money to attract other funding. The same component of a project cannot be funded for more than two grant cycles. However, applications requesting funding for different components of the same project will be considered.

Abstract: This is an announcement for competing revision application for awardees under the AIDS International Training and Research Program. This is a reissue of PAR-07-348.

The Fogarty International Center (FIC) AIDS International Research and Training Program, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Office of AIDS Malignancy Program, is seeking competing revision (formerly called supplement) applications to currently funded AIDS International Training and Research Program (AITRP) grants at U.S. institutions to complement on-going or to expand research training related to HIV-associated malignancies in low- and middle-income countries. The applications should propose only research training and should be in sites in low-and middle-income countries in which researchers at the AITRP U.S. institutions have existing research collaborations.

Rates of HIV-associated malignancies have increased in low- and middle-income countries as a result of the HIV epidemic. Now, the longer life expectancy of HIV+ people with access to treatment and care may increase their cumulative risk of developing cancer similar to solid organ transplant recipients who have a lifelong increased risk of cancer due to iatrogenic immune suppression. Cancer is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity during the lifespan of HIV-infected individuals. What is not yet known, and what must be prepared for, is the effect of prolonged moderate immunodeficiency, incomplete or failed response to ART, and perhaps ART itself on the long term cancer risks in HIV-positive/AIDS patients.

Malignancies in the setting of HIV infection provide a unique opportunity to investigate the interplay of viruses, immune deregulation, and cancer pathogenesis. Areas of research for which a research training program may be proposed may include, but are not limited to, pathogenic mechanisms, epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, assessment of risk factors, screening, determination of cancer rates and mortality in the HIV-positive population, treatment of cancers in the HIV-positive population, and tracking of outcomes of cancer treatment in the HIV-positive population.
