Sponsor Type: Federal, U.S.
Deadline: August 15, 2008
January 15, 2009
Deadline Note: The full proposal target dates for regular research proposals are August 15, 2008, and January 15, 2009.
Amount Note: Award size and duration are set at levels that provide sufficient support to enable as many investigators as possible to accomplish essential research activities on projects judged to be of highest quality. For regular proposals, about 15 to 25 percent of requests have been funded historically. The average award is about $90,000 over 16 months, although awards range from $20,000 (six months) to more than $300,000 (five years).

Abstract: The Geography and Regional Science (GRS) Program sponsors research on the geographic distributions and interactions of human, physical, and biotic systems on the Earth's surface. Investigations are encouraged into the nature, causes, and consequences of human activity and natural environmental processes across a range of scales. Projects on a variety of topics (both domestic and international) qualify for support if they offer promise of contributing to scholarship by enhancing geographical knowledge, concepts, theories, methods, and their application to societal problems and concerns. Support also is provided for projects that explicitly integrate undergraduate and graduate education into the overall research agenda.

Title: Studying Complex Systems - 21st Century Scientists Awards
Sponsor: McDonnell Foundation, James S.
21st Century Science Initiative
Studying Complex Systems Program
Sponsor Type: Private Foundation
Deadline: March 12, 2008
Upper Amount: $450,000
Amount Note: A maximum of $450,000 total costs can be requested and the funds can be expended over a minimum of three years or a maximum of six years.
Eligibility: Applicants must have completed academic training and hold a position compatible with the pursuit of independent research. Applications are welcome from researchers at any stage in their careers; however senior scientists must explain, in detail, how they themselves (not their research assistants and post-doctoral fellows) will use the funds to pursue break-out research substantially different from that ongoing in their laboratories.

Applicants must be sponsored by a nonprofit institution as defined by Section 501 (c) 3 of the United States Internal Revenue Tax Code.

There are no geographic restrictions for this grant competition.
Citizenship or Residency: Unrestricted
Activity Location: Unrestricted
Requirements: Ph.D./M.D./Other Professional
Abstract: 21st Century Research Awards are designed to support research projects with a high probability of generating new knowledge and insights. Projects submitted for funding consideration should be at an early, even preliminary stage of development, and should be intended to break new ground or to challenge commonly-held assumptions. Projects submitted should be sufficiently novel, cross-disciplinary, or heterodox so that they have a strong likelihood of influencing the development of new ways of thinking about important problems.

The Complex Systems program supports scholarship and research directed toward the development of theoretical and mathematical tools that can be applied to the study of complex, adaptive, nonlinear systems. It is anticipated that research funded in this program will address issues in fields such as biology, biodiversity, climate, demography, epidemiology, technological change, economic development, governance, or computation. While the program's emphasis is on the development and application of theoretical models used in these research fields and not on particular fields per se, JSMF is particularly interested in projects attempting to apply complex systems approaches to meaningful problems. Proposals attempting to apply complex system tools and models to problems where such approaches are not yet considered usual or mainstream (for example, differentiating normal physiology from disease) are encouraged.
