Abstract: The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement is to provide a vehicle for submitting grant applications for investigator initiated multi-site (Phase II or Phase III) randomized, controlled clinical trials. The trials may address any research question related to the mission and goals of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and may involve clinical or behavioral interventions. The trials may randomize at the individual (patient) level or at a group or "cluster" level (e.g., randomization of clinics, schools, worksites, etc.).

The proposed research must address a scientifically important question, must provide valuable information to the existing knowledge base, and must have public health applicability. Research topics should be based on the NHLBI's national program plan areas of heart, lung, and blood diseases, and sleep disorders.

Title: Special Emphasis Notice (SEN): AHRQ Announces Interest in Research on Diagnostic Errors in Ambulatory Care Settings (Unsolicited Proposals)
Sponsor: Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
Sponsor Type: Federal, U.S.
Deadline Note: Continuous. AHRQ announced in the October 26, 2007, edition of the NIH Guide to Programs that "AHRQ is providing information about one of the highest research priorities for unsolicited applications for fiscal year 2008. AHRQ will continue to provide regular updates of research priorities as research budget information becomes available. Applications focused on areas identified in this SEN should be submitted on regular research grant receipt dates and will be reviewed by AHRQ's standing study sections."

Information about the grant application process, including e-grant applications and the funding mechanisms noted above, can be found at http://www.ahrq.gov/fund/.
Amount Note: AHRQ will use standing grant mechanisms such as the R01, R03, R18, K08, and K02 funding mechanisms to support research on diagnostic errors. Applications will be funded for one to three years. Due to limitations on available grant funds, AHRQ limits the total (direct plus indirect) costs for the R01 and R18 mechanisms to no more than $300,000 per year. R03 applications are limited to total (direct plus indirect) costs of no more than $100,000 per year.

Abstract: In FY 2008, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) intends to support research designed to gain a better understanding of the incidence, cost, determinants, and strategies for preventing or mitigating diagnostic errors (i.e., misdiagnosis, missed diagnosis, delayed diagnosis) in ambulatory care settings. For the purposes of this Special Emphasis Notice (SEN), ambulatory care refers to health care provided in emergency departments; clinicians' offices and practices, both large and small; outpatient clinics; community health centers; urgent care centers; and ambulatory surgery centers.

Researchers from non-ambulatory settings with a strong interest in fostering safe, high quality ambulatory care and transitions are welcome to apply, but must do so in partnership with an ambulatory care organization. In particular, a focus on transitions between ambulatory care, home care, and nursing homes is critical to the success of ambulatory care for many elderly and chronically ill populations.

For purposes of this SEN, priority populations include low-income patients and the uninsured along with AHRQ's other priority populations (children, women, elderly, racial and ethnic minorities, and individuals with special health care needs).

Citizenship or Residency: Unrestricted
Activity Location: Unrestricted
Requirements: Ph.D./M.D./Other Professional
Abstract: Grand Challenges Explorations will foster early-stage innovation in global health research and expand the pipeline of ideas that merit further exploration. The program will employ a new, fast-track approach to grant making, with short two-page applications and no preliminary data required. Each round of the Grand Challenges Explorations initiative will award grants against a set of specific topics. For Round 1, the topics are as follows:
- Explore the Basis of Latency in Tuberculosis
- Create New Ways to Prevent or Cure HIV Infection
- Create New Ways of Protecting Against Infectious Disease
- Create New Drugs and Delivery Systems to Limit the Emergence of Resistance

In general, topics are chosen according to three major criteria:
1. The topic fits within the goals and disease priorities of the Grand Challenges in Global Health.
2. The topic contains a roadblock where radical, new thinking is needed for the discovery of an effective health solution.
3. Potential projects within the topic are likely to be well suited for the phased structure of the initiative.

In addition, the initiative considers whether a topic will engage the participation from scientists outside traditional global health disciplines, as well as researchers working in the developing world.

The Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative is a partnership dedicated to supporting scientific and technical research to solve critical health problems in the developing world. The initiative's partners are the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, and the Wellcome Trust.

Deadline Note: A letter of intent is due May 20, 2008. Invitations for full grant applications will be issued by June 25, 2008, and applications will be due September 10, 2008.
Upper Amount: $100,000

Abstract: The Prader-Willi Syndrome Association USA [PWSA (USA)] is pleased to offer grant assistance for scientific researchers with an interest in improving the lives of those with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). PWSA (USA) is especially interested in supporting research projects that have the potential for immediate and high impact to the PWS community. However, PWSA also seeks to balance its research funding between basic and applied research in order to seek new insights that could benefit its membership right away as well as to elucidate the causes of Prader-Willi syndrome in order to spur more potent and complete therapies in the future.

While PWSA (USA) is open to insightful grants in any subject area, the following areas are of particular interest to its constituency at this time. Research (basic or applied) in these areas will receive the highest priority:
1. Obesity - Obesity is the number one threat to the life expectancy and quality of life of someone with PWS. The resulting medical consequences of obesity and controlling obesity combined with the extraordinary stress that these issues bring to families makes hyperphagia a central life-long threat to those living with PWS.
2. Respiratory - Due to lifelong hypotonia and the complications of obesity, individuals with PWS are at risk for pulmonary issues. Sleep apnea, health risks due to upper respiratory infections, and aspiration are some of the concerns that PWSA (USA) believes are worth studying.
3. Other topics - Behavior and psychology, gastrointestinal (GI)
issues, appetite suppressors, genomics and proteomics, brain imaging and function, biomarkers for co-morbidities
