| Abstract: |
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) seeks
to facilitate the entry of investigators to the area of drug abuse
research on HIV/AIDS, including both newly independent investigators
(independent of a mentor but without R01 funding) and early career
investigators who seek to add research on the intersection of drug
abuse and HIV/AIDS to their research programs (applicants may have an
existing R01 grant but not one combining drug abuse and HIV/AIDS
research). HIV/AIDS research is a major focus at NIDA, but it is often
difficult for new investigators to obtain independent funding to
generate preliminary data or for early career investigators doing drug
abuse or HIV/AIDS research to identify a source of funding that would
allow them to expand their research to study the intersection of drug
abuse and HIV/AIDS research.
To promote the entry of new
investigators into research on the natural history, epidemiology,
etiology and pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of HIV/AIDS in
drug abusers, this AIDS-Science Track Award for Research Transition
(A-START) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) (R03) will support - pilot or feasibility studies, - secondary analysis of existing data, - small, self-contained research projects, - development of research methodology, and - development of new research technology.
It
is expected that investigators who are funded under A-START will use
their data to develop R01 grant applications on the intersection of
drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. |

| Abstract: |
This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) issued
by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), National Cancer
Institute (NCI), National Center on Complementary and Alternative
Medicine (NCCAM), National Institute on Aging (NIA), National
Institutes of Health (NIH), solicits grant applications from applicant
organizations that propose to - identify and assess biological or biobehavioral interactions among two or more related and co-occurring symptoms; - characterize mechanisms and pathways underlying the symptom interactions; - elucidate the level of interaction necessary for categorization as a symptom cluster; or -
design and test interventions targeted to interacting or clustered
symptoms that are hypothesized to lead to beneficial patient outcomes.
A
rationale for the choice of symptoms is needed, not just co-occurrence
of two or more symptoms. The symptoms must be associated with a target
disease or syndrome, or the treatment of this disease or syndrome.
Studies at any point in the disease trajectory, or during the
survivorship period, are encouraged.
Further, this FOA seeks to
stimulate research on the impact that interacting symptoms have on
patient experience and quality of life. Interacting symptoms may or may
not be characterized as true symptom clusters. The FOA particularly
encourages the design and testing of interventions addressing symptoms
that have demonstrated interactions or common pathways. For situations
where the knowledge base remains insufficient for intervention design,
mechanistic and methodological studies are encouraged. In this way,
knowledge can be developed and applied to the management of multiple
interacting symptoms or symptom clusters in relation to a variety of
physiological, psychosocial, and demographic factors.
This FOA
requires that the investigator will be concerned with more than one
symptom of cancer or of an immune disorder. Many potential subjects
will likely suffer from comorbid conditions (e.g., older cancer
patients with pre-existing osteoarthritis). The intent of this FOA is
to build a body of research concerned with interacting symptoms
associated with the primary condition; in this case, cancer or an
immune disorder. Subjects with comorbid conditions should be included
when appropriate. In such studies, the presence of comorbidity should
be addressed as a sampling and data analysis concern. The focus of the
research will be on symptoms associated with the primary condition that
is identified (i.e., a type of cancer or an immune disorder). |

postmarked by the deadline. |
| Upper Amount: |
$40,000 |
| Amount Note: |
Maximum funding available (total of direct and
indirect costs) is $40,000. Funds will be distributed by August 1,
2008. Funding is for one year. Grants from ARDF may not be used for the
principal investigator's salary or salary supplements, fringe benefits,

students, and related personnel are permitted. The foundation is only
able to provide up to 10 percent for indirect costs. Applicants are
encouraged to request an indirect cost waiver from their institutions.
If this is not possible, indirect costs must be justified in the budget
and assurances provided that funds will not support programs contrary
to ARDF's mission to replace and reduce animal-based research methods. |
| Eligibility: |
Grants from ARDF are made only to individuals
affiliated with a nonprofit, tax-exempt, institution, organization, or
foreign equivalent. Preference will be given to proposals from
individuals associated with U.S. institutions or organizations.
Projects
may be submitted without prior approval of the appropriate

| Abstract: |
The mission of ARDF is to fund and promote the
development, validation, and adoption of non-animal methods in
biomedical research, product testing, and education. Preferential
consideration will be given to proposals that utilize human rather than
nonhuman vertebrate tissue. Proposals are judged primarily on the basis
of (1) the extent to which the project will significantly reduce or
replace laboratory animals and (2) scientific merit and feasibility.
Proposals
will not be considered if the project uses intact, nonhuman vertebrate
or invertebrate animals or uses monoclonal antibodies produced by in
vivo methods. Source and production method for all antibodies must be
clearly identified in the proposal. In addition, ARDF strongly
discourages the use of serum or medium supplements obtained from
non-human vertebrates, e.g. FBS, and expects investigators to explain
how such products, if currently used, might be phased out in initial
stages of the project. |

| Abstract: |
The goal of this project is to advance a major new
international observational program to be completed by 2010 to assess
and explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life.
During
1997-1998 the goal of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation was to understand
the technical and institutional feasibility of a marine census.
Favorable technical and institutional signals led during 1999 to
adopting the ambitious goal of trying to make the census happen. An
international Scientific Steering Committee and Secretariat based at
the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education in Washington,
DC, now guide the program. Most grant-making occurs in conjunction with
the National Ocean Partnership Program. The first round of grants
focused on creation of the Ocean Biogeographical Information System
(OBIS), the framework for assimilation of data for the census. In
addition, support has been provided to initiate planning for possible
pilot field projects and to develop information on the history of
marine animal populations.
The Sloan Foundation plans to
continue to support the institutional framework for the census. It will
also consider efforts to address particular, indispensable scientific
needs on which the success of the census will rest. Also, the
foundation seeks opportunities to work with the institutions and media
that can build public interest and with maritime industries and
environmentalists to assure their meaningful participation. |

| Abstract: |
The UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme was conceived
as a way to advance research, training, and programme development in
higher education by building university networks and encouraging
inter-university cooperation through transfer of knowledge across
borders. This UNESCO programme serves as a prime means of capacity
building through the exchange of knowledge and sharing in a spirit of
solidarity. Thus it promotes north-south and south-south cooperation as
a strategy to enrich institutions. UNITWIN opens avenues for the higher
education community to join forces with UNESCO to achieve the
objectives of the global agenda. The UNITWIN Programme covers training,
research, and exchange of academics and offers a platform for
information sharing in all major fields within the competence of UNESCO.
The
majority of the projects are interdisciplinary and intersectoral and
involve all programme sectors at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and its
field offices, institutes, and centres. National commissions play an
important role in helping to facilitate the programme to promote
quality and assess impact. Relevance and effectiveness, at national,
regional, and global levels are among the prime goals of the programme.
So far UNITWIN projects have proven useful in establishing new teaching
programmes, generate new ideas through research and reflection, and
have facilitated enrichment of existing university programmes through
integration of cultural diversity. Because of the flexibility of the
UNITWIN Programme, universities can respond more readily and with
greater autonomy to the demands for new learning.
A Chair can
be established as a new teaching and research unit at a university or
other institution of higher education or research for an initial period
of three years. Such a unit should include the following: 1. A chair holder as its academic head 2.
A number of lecturers and researchers from the host institution and
from other institutions, both in the country concerned and from abroad
(particularly developing countries and those in transition) who are
associated with the activities of the chair 3. A number of students and researchers pursuing postgraduate studies or high-level training and research under the chair
A
group of universities in different countries (north-south, or
south-south) may decide to join forces in addressing an area of need in
the development context and so doing establish a Network. Within this
network, each participating institution may or may not have an
individual chair. However in practice, institutions in the network
progress towards establishing individual chairs. The partnership is
formal and is established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
for a duration of five years among the participating institutions, that
sets out the purpose of the network, its expected outputs, how it will
function and how it will be sustained. |

| Abstract: |
The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) is
accepting letters of intent for its competitive grants program that
focuses on the epidemiology, etiology, treatment, and prevention of
food allergy and anaphylaxis. Although proposals involving basic or
clinical research are accepted, applications that will lead to an
immediate or potential impact on the healthcare of persons with
IgE-mediated food allergy are especially encouraged. FAAN's research
program brings together scientists, patients, industry, government, and
foundations to advance research that will improve the quality of life
for patients and provide a guide in finding a cure for food allergy.
FAAN's integrated approach includes consulting with experts and helping
shape research ideas and programs around the world. |
