The University of Florida and Haiti’s Laboratoire National de Sante Publique (LNSP) partnered up to create the LNSP Training Program. The program trains Haitian laboratory technicians in both the U.S. and Haiti in advanced tuberculosis diagnostics. The program is an intense six-month training about rapid molecular TB diagnostics techniques and other diagnostic tests in Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) labs. The goal of the program is to build the capacity for better TB research and diagnostics resulting in the improvement of the health of the Haitian people.
The lab technicians, who are chosen by the LNSP, train one month in Gainesville, Fla. at Emerging Pathogens Institute BSL3 labs. Then they do five months of training at the fully functional BSL-3 TB Diagnostic Laboratory in Gressier, Haiti. When training is complete, lab technicians work in other LNSP labs throughout Haiti and apply what they have learned.
